OGLESBY, Samuel

Oglesby was an itinerant photographer who was active in the Eastern counties in the 1850s, as well as possibly working for a time in the North. Heathcote relates that he set up a temporary studio in Bury at some time between 1856 and 1858. He eventually settled in Llandudno in the 1860s.

Station Road, Halesworth

WS1885

Described as shopkeeper as well as photographer in MS1868 and HS1873. The WS1885 entries are separate, so could be an indication of two practitioners rather than just one practitioner with two studios.

He is described as ‘corn chandler, flour dealer and photographer’ in MS1868 and appears as G(eorge) Rayner junior until 1874.  The 30-year gap between 1874 and 1904 may well be an indication of  two practitioners.

REED, William

Reed has not been found in trade directories, but (ccording to LJ/IR) he ran a studio at 2 Pier Terrace, Lowestoft, before it was taken over by William Bevan in 1874.

REEVE, William Hastings

Appears in MS1868 as ‘photographer & fancy repository’. MS1868 KS1869, WS1874, WS1885 and KS1888 refer to William Reeve; KS1879 and KS1883 refer to Hastings Reeve; KS1892, WS1892, KS1896 and KS1900 refer to William Hastings Reeve. It seems possible that more than one practitioner could be represented here.

A ‘Reynolds of Lowestoft’ carte survives with '1862' handwritten on the back. At that time his cartes were priced at 6/- per dozen. He is described as ‘artist & photographer’ in HS1863 and HN1864. His advertisement in HS1863 reads: ‘Before you have your Portrait taken, pay a visit to Reynolds' Photographic Saloon ... and inspect the Specimens which will be found the Best and Cheapest Photographs Either on Glass or Paper, that have yet been placed before the public, including the much admired Carte de Visites. Mr Reynolds still continues to produce those works of art in Coloured Photographs, which for artistic merit, brilliancy, and durability, stand unrivalled.’
